15 Years, 15 Glorious Lux Style Awards Moments

On the 15th anniversary of the Lux Style Award’s we decided to look back and celebrate some of the most priceless moments in Pakistani award show history.  For the sake of this list we sat through almost 40 hours of footage and relived every single LSA that has taken place so far.  Here are some of the highlights:

1. Shan’s first ever live performance for the 2006 Lux style Awards

One of Lollywood’s biggest heart throbs of all time was used to doing dance numbers on screen, but he had never performed live. He was paired with his co-star Saima, who looked beautiful in her ‘laal laacha’ and the audience was left spellbound

2. Humayun Saeed wins his first award for Chaandni Raatein in 2003

Do you remember what a big blockbuster this serial was?  This was the time when all the ladies went ga ga over the very young and extremely handsome Humayun Saeed for the first time. His performance was praiseworthy and the serial, based on issues of polygamy and motherhood, very captivating. Humayun has come a long way, hasn’t he?

3. Moin Akhtar’s entertainment segments in 2003

What a precious night. The 2003 LSAs left us with so many beautiful memories of Moin Akhtar at his prime. He provided his audience with comic relief but it was clear as day that he was not just a humorist – he was, and still remains, one of  Pakistan’s most treasured actors, hosts, producers and writers.

4. Faysal Qureshi winning his first LSA award for Best TV Actor on a Satellite channel in 2005

Faysal won the best actor award for his comic performance in Main aur Tum. Nominated in the category alongside the biggest names of the television industry, like Nadeem sahib, Abid Ali, Firdous Jamal, Sajid Hasan and Talat Hussain, He said “I wasn’t expecting this. Just like Humayun scored a hat trick this year for winning awards, I will score one for not getting the award!”

5. Wasim Akram winning the Personality of the Decade award in 2006

This good looking and stylish cricketer thanked his club, his coaches, Javed Miandad, Mudassir Nazar and “the great Imran Khan” for his success. He said he had good teachers. Yup, that’s right, we’re not surprised – having IK as one of his mentors, Wasim Bhai was bound to become the style icon he is today!

6. When Runa Laila and Meera shared the stage to entertain the audience

The combination of Runa Laila’s beautiful voice and Meera’s electric thumkas created a dynamite combination on stage. It was a trip down memory lane as the duo relived this sixties classic.

7. Karma winning the Best Couture Designer award one year before they parting ways

It was highly ironic when Maheen Kardar Ali stated “I’d like to thank my partners, Kamiar and Saad - I can’t think of working with any other two people” upon winning the Best Couture Designer award in 2006. It was great to Rokni and Ali together on stage that year before they split and parted ways permanently, a year later. Since then, both the designers have come a long way with their separate design houses.

8. Hadiqa Kayani’s performance with her quirky hair cut and  models in mohawks!

Hadiqa entertained the audience with her song Meherman dilan deya during the 2006 awards show while dancing with hot male models clad in HSY’s latest collection. Side note: heart throb Adnan Malik from Sadqay Tumharay was also one of these men.

9. When Reema and HSY performed on ‘Love mein gum’ for LSA in 2011

HSY was the perfect dance partner for the talented and evergreen Reema. It is’nt  easy to dance in sync with the queen of Lollywood and hats off to HSY for doing an excellent job! We can now say that he dances as well as he designs!

10. When our very own Tennis Super star Aisaam ul Haq received the Most Stylish Person award for 2011 from Ayaan Ali, the model and ex-convict

Of course, sports and style go hand in hand and who doesn’t love a handsome young sports star in a good suit?

11. When Pakistan’s first fashion editor, Samina Ibrahim was given the lifetime achievement award in 2011

Whenever we will talk about Pakistan’s fashion journey, Samina Ibrahim’s name will always come up as the first Pakistani fashion editor who took Pakistan from the vague to the vogue. Her colleagues say that she understood photographs like a professional fashion photographer. Even after her 28 year journey in the fashion world she said “thank you, not just for the award but for inspiring me, hopefully, to a new beginning”.

12. When Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy was bestowed the Lux Style Award of Achievement 2012

“This is the first time I am being honoured in my own country and to receive an honour in your own country cannot be matched even by an Academy Award. As Pakistanis we need to start celebrating our own work,” said the two-time Oscar winner.

13. Hamsafar bagging 4 awards in one night for Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Drama and Best Director in 2013.

The audience wouldn’t have settled for anything less. What a glorious moment it was when sab ke dilon ki dhadkan, Fawad Khan, won Best Actor, the beautiful Mahira Khan won best Actress, the talented Momina Duraid won Best Drama and the extraordinary Sarmad Khoosat won Best Director for Humsafar. It was the biggest serial of 2012 and played an instrumental role in launching Fawad and Mahira’s bollywood careers and once again put Pakistani TV on the global map.

14. Pyare Afzal winning five awards in one night

Following closely on Humsafar’s footsteps, Pyaare Afzal owned the award night by winning all the major categories in TV.

15. When Ali Zafar bragged about his dance with Katrina Kaif in the 2015 LSA

And not only that, he challenged Fawad to also dance with Katrina! Little did we know that Karan Johar will love Fawad so much in Kapoor & Sons that he would cast him the following year with the lovely Katrina in his next venture! Good luck for that Fawad, we can’t wait to see you do that dance with Kat!

Five Awkward Moments at the Lux Style Awards

The reason why we attend them

Admit it: aren’t you always waiting for someone to say something they shouldn’t? What’s the fun of awards otherwise? They’re live and here celebs have one opportunity to let it all out in front of the entire entertainment industry. The LSA’s are this Friday and here are five awesome awkward moments to get you guys excited:
1. In 2005, when Resham was asked by Ali Kazmi (on stage) to reveal the secret to her beauty, she replied “Lux… aur kuch keh ke marna hai?” The audience, after a short pause, laughed awkwardly.

2. In the 2007 LSAs, when Reema was asked: “Tumhari beauty ka raaz kya hai?” by Moamar Rana, she replied, “Raaz tumhein to bata doon gi par Meera ko na batana, nazar lag jaye gi.” Meera didn’t have much to laugh about at that!

3. During the 14th Lux Style Awards in 2015, Urwa Hocane fell on stage during her performance on Hoey Dar Badar. There was an uncomfotable pause in the audience but when Urwa bravely stood up again and started performing, the audience applauded. One big blunder, covered up beautifully by Urwa!

4. Iman Ali and Shaan fighting on stage when Shoaib Mansoor won an award for Khuda Ke Liye in 2008. “Shaan went on and on about him, debating whether he is a good guy or bad guy and Iman couldn’t take it so she spoke up for him. While Shaan said it is difficult to work with him as an actor, he doesn’t give food breaks and that he “used” Pakistan as a launch pad to go to India, Iman exclaimed “Well, he is bigger than the budget and the food” before walking off the stage. Iman’s expressions while Shaan was still talking are not to be missed.

5. We all remember Ahmed Ali Butt’s hilarious opening of the 11th LSAs when he performed on “LSA just celebrate, LSA just love not hate” based on the tune of Smack That. Well, maybe the act was hilarious for the viewers but not so much for some celebrities! Some lyrics made some people feel pretty awkward – for example he said “Hamsafar ki koi nominee nahin hai” and Sultana Siddiqui had to pretend she found that funny. He said “Meera ko koi husband dilaa de” which left Miss Meera Jee pretty unamused. “Saari actresses kitni pyari lag rahi hein, ander hi ander ik doojay se jal rahi hein” – we are sure that statement was almost true and the truth did make some celebs move uncomfortably in their seats. You have to YouTube this if you missed it in 2012!

From runways to shop racks, from casual lawns to bridals, from Farah Talib Aziz to Zara Shahjahan, lavender seems to have conquered the Pakistani fashion scene this season.
